More Boys Are Affected By Autism Than Girls
Researches have been probing the fact that more boys than girls are victims of the mental disorder known as autism. A recent study published in the Journal of Molecular Psychiatry reports their findings on research they conducted to discover a possible answer to the higher number of males born with autism. The study clearly states that they have found an answer. The answer to the question of why more males are born with autism than females is due to a genetic factor. The study identifies a gene that is found in males more often than in females that increases the risk of autism. Is this new to you? Catch up here The identified gene is CACNAIG. The gene CACNAIG straddles the 17Th chromosome. The gene along with other genes controls the amount of calcium that is allowed in and out of cells. That includes all cells in the human body. No cause was discovered by the researchers as to why more boys than girls have the CACNAIG gene on top of the 17Th chromosome.
Since cells in the brain which includes nerve cells need calcium to work, the gene when improperly functioning plays a central cause in flooding the nerve cells with calcium which is said to be a cause of autism as well as epilepsy. Many autistic children are victims of epilepsy as well as autism. The flooding of nerve cells in the brain by calcium due to the improper functioning of the isolated gene CACNAIG is being suggested as the reason why more boys than girls have autism since the gene CACNAIG is found in more boys than girls.
